Tickets are now on sale for the Broadway production of Fela!. Conceived, choreographed and directed by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, the new musical begins performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on October 19, with opening set for November 23.
Fela!, featuring a book by Jim Lewis and arrangements by Aaron Johnson and Antibalas, is based on the life and music of iconic Nigerian composer and musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti and tells the story of Kuti's controversial life as an artist, political activist and revolutionary musician in Nigeria. In addition to forming a political party and running for president several times, Kuti created the enormously influential style of music known as “Afrobeat,” which blended jazz, funk and African rhythms and harmonies. He was arrested more than 200 times but chose to continue living in his home country. He died on August 3, 1997, of complications from AIDS, and nearly one million people attended his funeral. The musical received much acclaim for its off-Broadway production earlier this year, including the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.
The musical stars Sahr Ngaujah in the title role, Tony winner Lillias White as Fela’s mother Funmilayo, Saycon Sengbloh as Sandra and two-time Daytime Emmy winner (for The Guiding Light) Kevin Mambo, who alternates as Fela. They are joined by Corey Baker, Hettie Vyrine Barnhill, Lauren de Veaux, Nicole Chantal de Weever, Elasea Douglas, Rujeko Dumbutshena, Catherine Foster, Aimee Graham Wodobode, Rasaan-Elijah Green, Abena Koomson, Ismael Kouyate, Gelan Lambert, Farai Malianga, Shakira Marshall, Afi McClendon, Adesola Osakalumi, Jeffrey Page, Daniel Soto, Iris Wilson and J.L. Williams.
The creative team includes scenic and costume design by Marina Draghici, lighting design by Rob Wierzel, sound design by Rob Kaplowitz and projections by Peter Negrini.
